Arrow Shafts
An arrow shaft is the bare spine of the arrow, the carbon or aluminum tube you build into a finished arrow with your own nocks, inserts, points, and fletching. Most shafts are sold by the dozen and rated by spine (stiffness), straightness tolerance, and GPI (grains per inch), so you can match the shaft to your draw weight, draw length, and bow setup. You will find a few main builds: small and micro diameter carbon fiber for speed and penetration, aluminum for value and tight target straightness, and carbon over a traditional wood-grain look for recurve bow and longbow shooters who build traditional arrows. Spine, diameter, and straightness are what separate a hunting shaft from a target shaft, and the right pick comes down to how and what you shoot. Start with a bare shaft, and you walk away with an arrow tuned exactly to you, not an off-the-shelf compromise.
At Adventures Archery, we carry hunting and target arrow shafts from Easton, Victory, Carbon Express, and Gold Tip. As a full-service Florida archery shop, we stock bare shafts by the dozen, component packs with nocks and points, and we will cut, insert, and fletch your arrows in-house so they leave ready to shoot.
Arrow Shaft Features and Construction
Hunting Arrow Shafts
Hunting shafts run small and micro-diameter carbon to cut friction, hold a consistent spine, and drive deep on big game. The Easton 6.5 Bowhunter and 5MM Axis are proven hunting arrow shafts, with straightness around ±.003 to ±.006 and high grain weight for penetration and kinetic energy. A microdiameter arrow also bucks crosswind better, which helps in long-range hunting when your broadhead has to find the aim point downrange. These are built for the hunter who wants strength and accuracy in the field.
Target Arrow Shafts
Target shafts chase tight tolerances and a perfect match across the dozen for repeatable groups. The aluminum Easton X7 Eclipse holds ±.001 straightness and meets the industry standard for indoor and outdoor targets, while carbon options like the Victory 3DHV and Easton Avance Sport keep things light. Spine and weight stay consistent shaft to shaft for precision at distance. These suits target archers, 3D shooters, and archery enthusiasts who measure every point.
Shafts vs. Finished Arrows
A bare shaft is just the tube, so you choose every component: nocks, inserts, points, and vanes or feathers. Buying shafts and building your own arrow setup costs less per arrow than pre-made and lets you tune spine and length to your bow. Bring your shafts in, and we will fletch and cut them, or pick a fletched arrow if you want them ready to go.
Carbon vs. Aluminum Arrow Shafts
Carbon shafts are the modern standard for hunting and most target work. They run small and micro diameters for speed, penetration, and crosswind performance, hold a consistent spine, and shrug off the abuse of field shooting. Carbon arrows are the pick for hunters, 3D archers, and anyone chasing kinetic energy and long-range accuracy.
Aluminum shafts win on value and dead-straight tolerances at a fair price. They tune easily, fly true indoors, and give new archers a forgiving, affordable shaft to learn on. Aluminum is the call for indoor target leagues, beginners, and shooters who want precision without the carbon price tag.
Top Arrow Shaft Brands We Carry
Easton
Easton has been the top name in arrow shafts since 1922 and makes its carbon in the USA. The 6.5 Bowhunter and 5MM Axis lead the hunting line, while the X7 Eclipse and X23 set the bar for target and indoor. Stiffness, spine, and straightness stay consistent from one dozen to another dozen.
Victory
Victory builds high-performance carbon shafts known for spine-aligned accuracy and tight grouping. The VAP and V-TAC deliver micro-diameter speed and penetration, and the Xtorsion Hybrid pairs carbon with stainless steel for weight up front. A SHOK adaptor adds strength at the point.
Carbon Express and Gold Tip
Carbon Express makes the small-diameter CX Nano with feathers and points ready to build. Gold Tip rounds out the lineup with tough, accurate carbon shafts. Both give archers a dependable shaft at a friendly price.
How to Choose the Right Arrow Shaft
Start with how and what you shoot. Hunters want a small or micro diameter carbon shaft with the spine and grain weight to carry a broadhead and drive penetration on game. Target and 3D archers want the tightest straightness and a consistent spine across the dozen for precision at distance. Match spine and shaft weight to your draw weight and arrow length first, since a shaft that is too stiff or too weak will never tune, and our pro shop can run the numbers and a test kit with you in the shop.
Budget comes next. Entry-level shafts start around $25 to $60 a dozen and make a solid first arrow setup. Mid-tier carbon bows land near $90 to $150 with the spine and straightness most hunters and target shooters want. If you already own nocks, inserts, and points, a bare shaft by the dozen lets you build to your own spec and reuse the components you trust.
Arrow Shaft FAQs
An arrow shaft is the bare tube you build into a finished arrow. Spine is its stiffness, and you match it to your draw weight and arrow length so the arrow flexes correctly off the bow. Too stiff or too weak, and it will not fly true, so bring your numbers, and we will help you dial it in.
It depends on your goal. Carbon is lighter, tougher, and comes in small and micro-diameter builds for hunting speed and penetration. Aluminum offers dead-straight tolerances and value for indoor targets and new archers. Many shooters keep carbon for hunting and aluminum for the indoor range.
A finished arrow needs nocks, inserts, points or broadheads, and vanes or feathers. Match the component diameter and thread to your shaft, then cut to your draw length. We stock every component and will fletch and cut your shafts in-house.
