Compound Bows for Hunting
A compound bow is the modern vertical bow built for serious bow hunters. Its cam system and cables let you hold a fraction of the peak draw weight at full draw, so you can settle the pin and put more speed and kinetic energy behind every arrow than a traditional bow can. Our compound bows for hunting are tuned for the whitetail woods, the treestand, and the ground blind, where a smooth draw cycle and a quiet shot matter as much as raw speed. Most hunting bow models pair a machined riser with a tuned cam, and you will find lighter carbon or stiffer aluminum-riser bow builds with draw weights of 40 to 70 pounds and a wide draw length range to fit you.
At Adventures Archery, we carry adjustable and flagship compound bows for hunting from Hoyt, Mathews, Mission, PSE, Bowtech, Elite Archery, Diamond Archery, and Bear Archery. As a full-service Florida archery shop, we stock standalone bows, ready-to-hunt packages, and complete kits with the rest, sight, peep sight, quiver, and stabilizer you need before archery season opens.
Compound Hunting Bow Features and Construction
Aluminum-Riser Hunting Bows
Most hunting bows use a machined aluminum riser. Stiff, accurate, and friendly on the wallet, the aluminum-riser bow is the workhorse of the woods. The Hoyt Alpha AX-3 is a flagship compound with an easy tuning system, a smooth draw cycle, and a brace height of nearly 6 inches for speed. Aluminum builds give you flagship-level performance and a steady hold at full draw without the flagship price.
Carbon-Riser Hunting Bows
Carbon-riser bows are lighter and warmer to hold on cold mornings, which is why they sit at the premium tier. Hollow carbon also soaks up vibration for a quiet shot. The Hoyt CRBN RX-3 trims weight without losing stiffness, a real edge on a long climb or a spot-and-stalk for mule deer.
Ready-to-Hunt Packages
A ready-to-hunt package ships with the core accessories already installed: an arrow rest, a multi-pin sight, a peep sight, a quiver, and a stabilizer. The Hoyt Enduro ships this way, as do many Mission and Bear Archery models. The package costs less than sourcing each part on its own, and we tune the whole rig on a bow press before it leaves the shop.
Hunting Bows vs. Target Bows
A hunting bow is built to be carried, drawn quietly, and held steady in tight quarters. It runs a shorter axle-to-axle length, often 28 to 33 inches, so the shorter bow is easy to maneuver from a treestand or ground blind. The lighter mass helps on long days in the whitetail woods, and a short brace height adds the speed you want inside your effective range.
A target bow, or target compound bow, is a different animal. It carries a longer axle-to-axle measurement and a longer brace height, which steadies the pin and tames pin float at longer distances on the range. That extra length makes a target bow forgiving for paper and 3D but clumsy in the field. Most bow hunters keep the two separate: a target compound bow for practice and a hunting bow for archery season. It comes down to personal preference.
Top Compound Hunting Bow Brands We Carry
Hoyt
Hoyt is known for accuracy and a rock-steady aim. The Alpha AX-3 is its flagship hunting line, the carbon CRBN RX-3 sits at the premium tier, and the Enduro brings a ready-to-hunt package to a friendlier price.
Mathews and Mission
Mathews builds high-end engineering into bows like the Atlas, with its Crosscentric cam system and 3D Damping for a smooth draw cycle and a quiet shot. Mission is the Mathews-backed value line, and platforms like the Stryde and Switch adjust across a wide draw length range, so one bow grows with a new whitetail hunter or young shooter.
PSE, Bowtech, Elite, and Diamond
PSE builds for the American bow hunter with bows like the Decree EC2. The Bowtech Solution SD and Elite Archery Option 6 are favorites for shootability and a forgiving hold that keeps pin float in check. Diamond Archery makes the budget-friendly, fully adjustable Edge XT, a strong first hunting bow.
How to Choose the Right Compound Bow for Hunting
Start with where and what you hunt. A shorter bow moves in a ground blind or tight treestand, while a few more inches axle-to-axle steady your aim in open country. Match draw weight to your game: many states set a legal minimum, and 40 pounds and up covers most whitetail, while 60 to 70 pounds adds the kinetic energy that drops an elk or larger game. Dial in your draw length so the bow hits its sweet spot at full draw, and pick a draw cycle that suits you, since draw feel is partly personal preference. New shooters do well on an adjustable bow, while an experienced whitetail hunter may want a fixed flagship compound.
Budget shapes the rest. Entry-level adjustable bows start around $400 and often arrive as a ready-to-hunt package with a rest, sight, and peep sight installed. A mid-tier package bundles the rest, sight, quiver, stabilizer, and matched arrow set so you are shooting the day it arrives. If you already own your peripherals, a standalone bow lets you move your favorite accessories and arrow set straight over.
Compound Hunting Bow FAQs
Most whitetail hunting calls for at least 40 pounds, and many bow hunters run 60 to 70 pounds for extra speed, kinetic energy, and penetration on a heavy arrow. Larger game like elk or mule deer reward the heavier end. Check your state's rules first, since the legal minimum in pounds varies. Our pro shop will measure your draw length and set your weight while you are in.
You can, but a hunting bow is the better tool. A target bow, or target compound bow, runs a longer axle-to-axle length and a longer brace height, built for steady aim at longer distances. A hunting bow is a shorter bow, lighter and quieter, with a short brace height for speed in the stand. The tradeoff is a little more pin float at full draw, so most hunters keep a hunting bow for archery season and a target bow for practice.
That depends on your goals and your state's regulations. A compound bow is a vertical bow, drawn and held by hand, which many bow hunters prefer for the challenge and the longer archery seasons it can open up. A crossbow is a horizontal bow that stays cocked and shoots more like a firearm, which suits hunters with limited mobility. Both take the game inside their effective range. If you want a traditional bow feel with modern speed, the vertical compound is the way to go.
At minimum, you will want an arrow rest, a sight, a peep sight, a release aid, a quiver, and a matched arrow set tipped with broadheads. Your arrow set should match your draw weight and draw length so each shaft flies true. Many of our compound bows for hunting come as packages with the core pieces installed, and we tune everything on a bow press before you head out.
