Aluminum-Riser Hunting Bows
Most hunting bows use a machined aluminum riser. Stiff, accurate, and friendly on the wallet, the aluminum-riser bow is the workhorse of the woods. Hunting Bows vs. Target Bows
A hunting bow is built to be carried, drawn quietly, and held steady in tight quarters. It runs a shorter axle-to-axle length, often 28 to 33 inches, so the shorter bow is easy to maneuver from a treestand or ground blind. The lighter mass helps on long days in the whitetail woods, and a short brace height adds the speed you want inside your effective range.
A target bow, or target compound bow, is a different animal. It carries a longer axle-to-axle measurement and a longer brace height, which steadies the pin and tames pin float at longer distances on the range. That extra length makes a target bow forgiving for paper and 3D but clumsy in the field. Most bow hunters keep the two separate: a target compound bow for practice and a hunting bow for archery season. It comes down to personal preference.

How to Choose the Right Compound Bow for Hunting
Start with where and what you hunt. A shorter bow moves in a ground blind or tight treestand, while a few more inches axle-to-axle steady your aim in open country. Match draw weight to your game: many states set a legal minimum, and 40 pounds and up covers most whitetail, while 60 to 70 pounds adds the kinetic energy that drops an elk or larger game. Dial in your draw length so the bow hits its sweet spot at full draw, and pick a draw cycle that suits you, since draw feel is partly personal preference. New shooters do well on an adjustable bow, while an experienced whitetail hunter may want a fixed flagship compound.
Budget shapes the rest. Entry-level adjustable bows start around $400 and often arrive as a ready-to-hunt package with a rest, sight, and peep sight installed.
